Beware Fake Equifax Settlement Websites

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Looking forward to your cash settlement with Equifax after hackers stole your data from the credit-rating agency?

That's great. But be careful that you don't become a victim of identity theft again.

The Federal Trade Commission on Monday tweeted a warning about fake websites that could try to lure consumers into divulging their personal information. The official website is equifaxbreachsettlement.com, but people can also access the site through the FTC website.

Beware of fake websites claiming to be the Equifax settlement claims website. To be sure you are going to the legitimate site, you can access it from the @ftc's Equifax page: https://t.co/6Dz4lQYEf2 pic.twitter.com/1qDV3xyYSn

At the settlement website, consumers can find out if their data was compromised in the Equifax breach that occurred in 2017. If so, they can sign up for free credit monitoring or request a $125 cash settlement, among other options. The settlement is pending court approval.

The data breach exposed Social Security numbers and other private information of nearly 150 million people, authorities have said.
