Big Money Rules In Chicago Mayoral Race: Study

Chicago City Hall

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayoral candidates often say they are for the little people, but a new report says it's the rich people who are almost completely funding their campaigns.

Alisa Kaplan, policy director for the group Reform for Illinois, says a study of donations to Chicago mayoral campaigns last year shows less than 1.5 percent of the contributions came from people giving $150 or less.

Top fundraiser Bill Daley's top 13 donors gave him half his money.

Meantime, small donors put up almost 8 percent of Lori Lightfoot's campaign contributions.

So, why does this matter? Kaplan says politicians are more likely to listen to their big donors than everyday people.

Kaplan's group has long called for campaign finance reform.
