Body Of 16-Year-Old Girl Pulled From Lake Michigan In Michigan City

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The body of a 16-year-old girl was recovered Monday from Lake Michigan, after she was reported missing while swimming with family.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the teen, from New Haven, Indiana, was swimming with her family at about 2 p.m. near the Michigan City lighthouse pier and disappeared.

Divers from multiple agencies began a search, and members of the Michigan City Fire Department found the girl’s body about 50 minutes later and began performing life-saving measures immediately.

The teen was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

According to the Northwest Indiana Times, at the time of the incident, a beach hazard statement, which warned of dangerous swimming conditions, was in effect.

The girl’s death remains under investigation.
