2 Hit-And-Runs In Aurora Result In Boy, 8, Killed, Man Charged With DUI

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An 8-year old boy is dead after one of two hit-and-run crashes at the same intersection within an hour of each other Monday night in Aurora.

The 8-year-old boy, his grandfather, and his sister were walking across Lake Street at 7:42 p.m. Monday night at the Plum Street intersection when a southbound vehicle on Lake Street fatally hit the boy. The grandfather was also hit and taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Bill Rowley.

Rowley said witnesses reported the crash and "other witnesses called in similarly described vehicle with heavy front end damage parked nearby, two houses down from the crash and subjects were seen fleeing from the vehicle."

Police caught one of the people believed to have been in the vehicle, but it's not known if that person was the driver. They ask anyone with information to call 630-256-5000.

Meanwhile, as police were investigating the fatal crash, Sgt. Rowley said a speeding minivan hit a police squad that had been blocking the road. The officer who was in the squad was not injured, but he was taken to Mercy Hospital to be checked out. He was later released.

Sgt. Rowley said the driver of the minivan was stopped a short distance away and that police smelled a strong odor of alcohol on him.  Police say 48-year-old John Lundy, of Aurora, admitted to having been drinking and speeding.

Rowley said Lundy was arrested and is charged with two counts of driving while on a suspended or revoked license related to a previous DUI arrest (a Class 4 felony), two felony counts of driving under the influence, misdemeanor DUI, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident.

Lundy is expected to be arraigned Tuesday morning and his first court date is scheduled for April 18.
