CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A woman was injured Thursday afternoon when a piece of metal fell from vintage building at Michigan and Madison.

An eyewitness says a woman was walking east on Madison toward Michigan Avenue when a piece fell off the Willoughby Tower. The fragment was about a foot long.

A witness told WBBM Newsradio the piece hit the woman in the back and made a loud noise when it hit the ground. The woman was bleeding.

"It looked like a tiger had scratched her in the back. It was pretty bad."

The woman was conscious and sitting up at the scene.

The Chicago Building Department said the fragment was a piece of a metal panel. The managers of the Willoughby Tower were installing a protective canopy after the accident.

The building dates back to 1929.
