(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Islamophobia is the target of a conference in the western suburbs this weekend.
Religious leaders were meeting at the Mecca Center in Willowbrook Friday and Saturday for "Faith over Fear," a seminar that teaches people strategies to combat anti-Muslim prejudice.
The conference is organized by Shoulder to Shoulder. Director Catherine Orsborn said the biggest challenge is fighting anti-Muslim sentiment on social media.
"The social media realities are challenging for everyone working on any sort of issue right now. We can't stop the tide of memes that are meant to create fear," Orsborn said.
Breakout sessions have names like "Addressing Hot Button Issues" and "Understanding and Unpacking Anti-Muslim Bigotry."
Orsborn said the purpose of the conference is to teach people to change minds.
"When they meet people who shatter a stereotype for them, it starts to break away.”
A Faith over Fear conference in Seattle attracted more than 100 people.
