Chicago Crossing Guard Of The Year Retires After 51 Years On The Job

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago's "Crossing Guard of the Year" was honored this afternoon in a big ceremony at the North Side school where she works.

Roxie Calhoun had the biggest smile when hundreds of students at St. Benedict Preparatory School stood up and cheered, holding signs that read such things as "We love you!" and Thanks, Roxie!"

After 51 years on the job, Calhoun is retiring. But she's not going away… at least not entirely.

Students presented Calhoun with gifts, hugs and signs to celebrate her last day on the job, as well as cheers and claps that rang through the gym. She reminisced on keeping children safe and bestowing love and happiness to the school community.

"We were a family," she said.

Calhoun takes two trains and a bus every morning from her South Side home to get to her post at Irving Park and Leavitt just in time to help students and parents cross the street on the way to school.
