CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- One of the biggest hotels in Chicago is closing its doors on Thursday night — a likely victim of coronavirus fears.
WBBM’s Steve Miller reports.
The Sheraton Grand Chicago, along the Chicago River at Columbus Drive, says it will close Thursday night at one minute before midnight.
A statement from the hotel’s director of marketing, Marcus Cornelious, says the 1,200-room hotel is closing temporarily. “We … look forward to reopening again as soon as possible,” he said in a statement.
The Sheraton Grand has 400 union employees. Bellman Victor Chan has worked there for 26 years, nearly as long as the hotel has operated.
He says this layoff is a first for him.
“I work here September 11, too. And people were leaving but I was still working here by myself.”
The full statement from Cornelious: “The Sheraton Grand Chicago has made the decision to close temporarily, effective Thursday, March 26th at 11:59PM. We are communicating this information to our guests and are relocating reservations to alternate locations. We regret any inconvenience and look forward to re-opening again as soon as possible.”
