CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Pointing to a record number of flu cases in Australia, the Cook County's Health Department is encouraging people here to get a flu shot.

Medical experts frequently look to other spots on the globe to see what viruses we can expect here.

Emergency medicine physician at Stroger Hospital Dr. Michael Nelson on Monday said the flu season is wrapping up in Australia, where they have seen four times the number of flu cases over the year before.

That does not guarantee the Chicago area will be seeing the same strain of influenza here, but Cook County wants people to get vaccinated.

There has been a slight delay in this year's flu shots but Dr. Nelson encourages people to get them as soon as they can.
