CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Following the lead of Portland, where a “Wall of Moms” formed to try to keep demonstrators safe, Chicago has its own, similar group — maybe.
The Wall of Moms Chicago Facebook group was founded a few days ago and already has more than 5,000 members.
It’s not clear, however, what events they have planned. An “action” scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled, according to the Facebook page.
Some members are upset the page is public. Others are questioning the group’s makeup. As one wrote: “This group appears to be white women coopting leadership from (Black, Indigenous and People of Color).”
One person posted a photo of someone wearing a sign that read, “Wall of Moms is not the story. Black people dying is the story.”
WBBM Newsradio has tried to reach organizers of the Wall of Moms Chicago Facebook page.
Federal law enforcement representatives in Portland, where demonstrations have been nonstop, have come under fire for their treatment of protesters. A "surge" of federal agents is coming to Chicago, but Mayor Lightfoot says she understands they will help police combat crime. She has vowed to respond if the feds overstep their bounds here.
