CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Police say it started with a murder. Then, an officer was shot in the wrist. Finally, a suspect was arrested in West Garfield Park.

Acting Police Supt. Charlie Beck said an undercover officer on Wednesday afternoon saw a man shoot and kill another person on a sidewalk in the 4000 block of West Madison.

The shooter fled in a pickup truck, Beck said, and when the officer followed the pickup, the other man fired multiple rounds at the officer. The officer was struck in the wrist.

Beck says fellow officers were driving the wounded officer to Stroger Hospital, when they noticed the pickup.

"The officers driving the transporting vehicle asked the injured officer, who had been shot, did he still want to go directly to the hospital or should they apprehend the offender?

"He elected that they should apprehend the offender."

Mayor Lightfoot praised the officer.

"There's no question that the officer's work today in recognizing the danger the community was in from the offender who was then fleeing the scene, ended up saving other lives," she said.

Doctors said the officer was expected to be released from the hospital within 24 hours.
