CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Since Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced the Lakefront and 606 trails would reopen Monday, Chicagoans have been counting down the days until they're able to enjoy two of the city's most-appreciated outdoor spots. Lightfoot shut down the trails in March to help quell the spread of the novel coronavirus.
On the sidewalks of Lake Shore Drive, residents who live nearby await the reopening of the Lakefront trail.
“I’m excited. I feel like it’s been half-opened for the last month,” one woman told WBBM.
Another woman, also walking on the Lakefront trail, said she’s ”excited” about the reopening and “a thousand percent” would be using it while staying socially distant from others.
As reported and acknowledged by Lightfoot, there has been some leakage during the Lakefront trail closure and as Chicago police officers keep an eye on social distancing from ATVs, people throw frisbees, roller skate, bike and jog at North Avenue beach.
And alongside the trail, one woman has strung a hammock between two trees soaking up the sun with a view of the lake and the city’s famous skyline.
