CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Fire Department said a child is being treated for a puncture wound after falling into a hole near the lakefront Monday afternoon.
A department spokesman said the child and the child's grandfather were in the 400 block of West Briar Place a little before 5 p.m. when the child fell into a light shaft, basically, a hole that lets light into a basement that's below grade.
A grate normally covers a hole like that, and it's not clear if there was a grate.
Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford says the child fell into the five-foot-deep hole and suffered a puncture wound to the abdomen. Rebar or some other material at the bottom of the shaft injured him, he said.
The grandfather was not injured.
The child was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
