CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Residents of the Rogers Park neighborhood on Chicago's North Side continue to watch their beaches disappear as higher lake levels erode the Lake Michigan shoreline.
In response to the problem, city officials said some effort will be made next week to shore things up along the lakefront.
Juneway Terrace Beach is the worst: A sidewalk upended and what was the beach under and around it is gone.
A resident of a lakefront apartment told us last week things were getting so bad, she's getting sand on her balcony.
Fortunately for such residents, work will begin next week to fix the erosion.
"We received news from the Department of Transportation and the Chicago Park District earlier this week that beginning on Monday, crews will begin to install armor rock," said Leslie Perkins, the chief of staff for 49th Ward Alderman Maria Hadden. The 49th Ward encompasses the city's Rogers Park and parts of West Ridge neighborhoods.
Armor rock is essentially big boulders. A stopgap.
Hadden's office said the Juneway Beach project will take 4 to 5 weeks and then crews will move on to Howard Beach and then Rogers Beach.
The plan for next y ear includes more work, like backfilling that'll rebuild the land lost to erosion.
