(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago area community college is offering a pathway for students who may be interested in the burgeoning medical-cannabis industry.
Students at Oakton Community College who combine the school’s cannabis dispensary and patient care specialist certificates into an associates of general studies will now have a guarantee transfer to Northern Michigan University, where they can then obtain a bachelor’s in Medicinal Plant Chemistry.
It’s the first of its kind partnership nationwide between a community college and a four-year institution, says Stephen Butera, the senior manager of media relations at the Oakton Community College.
Butera says the short-term certificate program at Oakton is perfect for adults looking to change careers and enter the emerging medical cannabis industry. Or, students can begin their path toward a four-year degree.
The program fills a growing need in the niche industry, he said.
