CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There’s a warning from authorities in the northern suburbs about a COVID-19 contact-tracing scam.

The alert comes from the Lake County Health Department. Spokesperson Hannah Goering says legitimate contact tracers just happened to find out about the ruse.

"Over the past week when our contract-tracing staff was reaching out to someone to do an investigation and notify them and ask them questions, the person responded that they had already been contacted by the health department,” Goering said Friday.

“We checked our records. We had not spoken to this person. And as we asked questions further, this person let us know that they had given out some personal information like a Social Security number to someone over the phone.”

Goering says legitimate contact tracers will never ask for information like that — or ask someone to pay a fee.
