CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A coyote is “scared,” but doing “fine” after he was rescued Tuesday morning after falling into Lake Michigan at Monroe Harbor.
Firefighters and police were called for an animal in the water at about 11:20 a.m. in the 100 block of North Lake Shore Drive, according to police and fire department officials.
Crews were able to pull the coyote from the water and give it to the care of Animal Care and Control, according to fire department spokesman Larry Merritt.
"They had him on a gurney with blankets - because it's very cold," said Kelley Gandurski, executive director of Chicago Animal Care and Control. "They can get hypothermia, but we don't know if he has it or not. He seems to be doing okay. He was put in a crate and transported to Chicago Animal Care and Control, where he is warming up right now."
Gandurski said the coyote is small, possibly a pup.
“I just looked at him; He’s scared, but he’s fine,” Gandurski said.
Gandurski said the coyote was already pulled from the water before Animal Control arrived.
She said Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is taking the coyote there, to the northern suburbs, with the hopes of releasing him to the wild.
