CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Officer Bernardo Quijano recalls the moment he was shot at by Juan Lopez at Mercy Hospital.

"I felt the impact. It sorta felt like a punch," he recalls. "At this point we just dove for cover."

Quijano was helping the wounded when the bullet hit his holster and lodged into his gun. The bullet missed his body by inches.

On November 19, 2018, Juan Lopez opened fire and killed his ex fiance in the parking lot then ran into the hospital and killed a pharmacy resident and fellow Chicago Police Officer Samuel Jiminez.

"It was chaotic inside," recalls Turcinovic, a 13-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department.

Officer Samuel Jimenez had only been on the job for 18 months when he rushed to the scene to provide backup to other officers who were already there. He was killed in a shootout with the gunman, who took cover inside the hospital.

"I definitely honor Officer Jiminez and his family as well," said Quijano who said that day made him a better police officer and a better man.

Emergency room doctor Tamara O'Neal, pharmacy resident Dayna Less and Officer Jimenez were killed that day.

The shooting began in the parking lot outside Mercy Hospital as part of a domestic dispute between O'Neal and Lopez.

"We did the best we could that day," Quijano said.

Samuel Jimenez will be remembered this year when his name is added to the wall at the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park.
