CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Police Department has announced the results of a weeklong operation conducted on the West Side that removed violent offenders, illegal drugs and guns from the street.
Deputy Chief of Patrol Ernest Cato said the department took 55 people into custody for various charges, including unlawful use of a weapon, robbery, narcotics and illegal guns. He said 41 out of the 55 people have already appeared in front of the judge.

Alderman Walter Burnett (27th Ward) also spoke at the virtual press conference, saying that while there are fewer people out on the street during the pandemic, it's easier for people to spot drug dealers. He also has a warning for those committing crimes.

"We want to let the guys out there doing wrong that it may look like it's a vacation for everyone but it's not a vacation for the Chicago police," Burnett said. "This gives them a better opportunity to put eyes on you. You are being targeted because you can be seen."

His simple advice for those doing illegal activities instead of contributing to the community — especially during the pandemic — is to stop.
