(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Aurora man known for erecting crosses at locations where people have died is retiring.

He's been placing crosses since 1996 -- more than 27,000 crosses built at his home. His mission, his daughter writes, was to show love and not force his faith on anyone.

The ministry, she says, has taken a toll on her family. Members have worried about Zanis while he was traveling cross-country to the financial burden.

The family is extremely proud of  him for following his heart, but more proud of him for realizing its time to take a break and focus on himself.
