Consumers who buy the Land O'Lakes brand of dairy products may have noticed or seen news stories in recent days that something is missing: the Indian maiden who for decades decorated the label.
The Minnesota-based dairy cooperative recently began phasing out imagery of the Native American woman with the feathers in her hair. Soon, all Land O'Lakes packaging will be without the portrait, the New York Times reports. The revamp comes as the brand prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2021.
The Land O'Lakes Indian character is the type of imagery that some Native American organizations have criticized as being phony or offensive.
