SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A three-alarm fire Saturday afternoon that caused the partial collapse of an auto body repair shop in south suburban South Holland created a plume of smoke that could be seen for miles but did not result in any injured.

South Holland paramedics returning from a call spotted the fire at the Gerber Collision and Glass shop on Suntone Drive a block north of 162nd Street and called for help.

South Holland Deputy Fire Chief Bryant Krizik said that call allowed firefighters to get to the shop quickly enough to keep it from spreading to neighboring businesses.

"We ended up with heavy fire involvement in the attic of the Gerber auto repair shop," Krizik said.
Krizik said workers in the shop were able to escape, though firefighters were driven from the building because of the intense flames.

Firefighters were called in from across the south and southwest suburbs as well as from Northwest Indiana.

Krizik said no one was hurt and the fire is under investigation.
