(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The chairman of the Illinois Senate’s Higher Education Committee said Monday he’s upset by reports some higher-income families are exploiting a legal loophole to qualify for college financial aid.
WBBM’s Jim Gudas reports.
State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Crest Hill, said he isn’t happy to learn about a report from ProPublica Illinois. The group says some parents are giving up legal custody of their children to friends or relatives so that the students can declare themselves financially independent and qualify for financial aid they wouldn’t otherwise get.
McGuire said he’s not a lawyer, so he can’t say whether the loophole is legal or not.
But he promised to work with the governor, the attorney general and other Illinois legislators in response.
