(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A woman who owned and operated private schools in the south suburbs is facing federal charges of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from a program to help needy kids.

She was the founder and president of Beacon Hill Preparatory Academy in the south suburbs. Now, Pamela Strain is accused of failing to report income to the IRS. The feds say she took hundreds of thousands in income from a school meals program for poor children.

Strain’s attorney, Michael Monico, said Strain is expected to plead guilty.

“She’s been an educator her whole life, and she’s just a wonderful person from a wonderful family. It’s just a shame that this happened. And we’re going to deal with it,” he said.

Monico says the guilty plea to two tax counts carries a potential prison of more than two years. His client hopes it will be less than that.

Strain is helping to care for her 93-year-old mother.

"We hope the matter will be resolved soon," Monico said.
