EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The mayor of Evanston is calling for a criminal investigation into leaked documents.

Evanston Mayor Steve Haggerty has asked the Cook County sheriff’s office to open a formal investigation into leaked documents that contain the names of city employees who made harassment complaints against an elected official.

In a letter to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, Haggerty said in April 2017, three city of Evanston employees filed unhealthy workplace environment complaints against Evanston City Clerk Devon Reid. It's then alleged that Reid removed recordings of Evanston city council executive sessions off premises and eavesdropped on elected officials and others.

Haggerty also said Reid was arrested by Evanston Police on July 17 on an unrelated warrant.

In a letter to Evanston residents, Haggerty said he is disappointed that he had to "make such an unpleasant and embarrassing request" to the Sheriff's office.

WBBM has reached out to Haggerty and Reid for comment.
