(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- North suburban Evanston has erected a stone memorial to honor two firefighters who died in a fire 114 years ago.

Evanston firefighters William Craig and George Stiles were killed when a wall collapsed at the Clayton Marks manufacturing plant at Dempster and Dodge on Dec. 13, 1905.

Evanston Fire Engineer Tim Gobat led the effort to erect the stone memorial featuring the names of Craig and Stiles at the site of the deadly fire.

Gobat says the stone memorial ensures Craig and Stiles will now be honored every day, not just on the anniversary of their deaths.

He also says it’s a constant reminder of the potential risks firefighters face in protecting the rest of us.
