Evicted Senior Allegedly Broke Housing Rules During Pandemic

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — An elderly man is being evicted from his retirement center in west suburban Bartlett because administrators there say he broke the rules designed to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The rules have been in place at Clare Oaks Senior Living since March 11. Visits from outsiders are limited, and no one under 18 is allowed.

Clare Oaks CEO Gigi Walker said one resident's behavior — having visits from family and a grandchild under 18 — put other residents at risk.

So, Walker says the man's residency agreement has been terminated. In other words, he'll be evicted.

"It's a very unfortunate situation. He just wasn't compliant, and it came to this. There were warnings and communications that went out to all the residents.

"It's not a happy situation or a pleasant situation, but the greater good dictates action.  So, that's how we got to where we are."

Walker says the man, believed to be about 90, has been a resident since 2008.

She says the man's residency agreement was terminated last week, and he has 30 days from then to leave.
