(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Public health experts have said the United States is about 10 days behind Italy, where there is an alarming number of coronavirus cases and deaths.

We talked with a former Chicago resident now living in Milan.

Nobody believed it could get so bad, at first, said Monica Tieghi, a former Chicagoan who has lived in Milan for 30 years.

She said the COVID-19 outbreak developed like a snowball going down a mountain.

And there’s talk of extending the lockdown. “You call the supermarket, or you do it online, and they tell you that they’ll deliver your food in 10 days. That doesn’t really solve your problem," she said. "

Tieghi said even parks are closed — and locked. You can go to the doctor or to the pharmacy.

“The other thing you can go out for is walking your dog.  That is a legitimate reason for going out.  But a lot of people - what are they doing? - they’re going out with the dog for, like, eight times a day.”

She still has friends in Chicago and is glad to hear Illinois is now under a "stay at home" order.
