(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The former mayor of south suburban Posen was found dead in his home Thursday morning after he didn't show up in federal court where he was to be sentenced in an embezzlement case.

When 79-year-old Donald Schupek was a no-show at his sentencing in federal court, the judge issued a warrant for officers to check Schupek's home.

Officials say that's when they found his body in his bedroom.

Schupek pleaded guilty three months ago to embezzlement, admitting to taking $27,000 from the village of Posen for his personal expenses, including gambling.

Schupek's attorney, Domingo Vargas, said Schupek's death was a shock to him and to Schupek's family, including his sister-in-law.

"It was a shock to her. She even mentioned they were a family of faith.

"For the type of case it was -- even though it's a serious matter -- but it wasn't that serious, in my opinion."

The medical examiner has not issued a cause of death.
