CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Well, that didn’t last long... One of the custom-designed masks that were installed on numerous Chicago landmarks Thursday with great fanfare was stolen.

One of the Chicago flag masks placed on the lions statues in front of the Art Institute of Chicago was stolen Thursday night, less than 12 hours after it went up.

Dimension Design, in Glenview, came up with the idea for the masks, which were also put on Daley Plaza Picasso, the Michael Jordan statue at the United Center, Harry Caray at Wrigley Field, the Bean, and the Superdawg hot dogs.

"Mayor Lightfoot quickly recognized that putting masks on these landmarks would be a creative way to remind Chicagoans that we are all in this together," said Dimension Design co-founder Jeremy Biewer. "That we really should be taking necessary steps to protect each other as we navigate through this difficult time."

Police said a security guard saw a car stop in front of the Art Institute of Chicago, located at 111 S. Michigan Ave., around 11 p.m. Two men climbed on one of the lions statues, cut the mask off, and sped away.

No one is in custody, police said.

It's a good bet that there is surveillance video, which if police want to take it that far, could lead to the suspects.
