(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mike Gault has been to every Indianapolis 500 since 1967.
But this year will be different, and he’s heartbroken.
The famous race was moved from May to this weekend because of the pandemic. Organizers ultimately decided not to let fans in the stands, crushing Gault’s hopes of watching another contest firsthand.
“I was pretty angry. Then I kind of got more towards devastated and heartbroken toward the evening and then I had to come to accept it,” he tells CBS 4 in Indianapolis.
He’ll have to settle for watching his 54th race from home, but it won’t be the same, Gault says.
“I feel for the driver that wins this year. That’s going to be in victory lane, drinking the milk with nobody there to share it with him,” Gault said.
He adds: “By any chance, they want to sneak me in, I’ll be a water boy for them if they wanted me to.”
