CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 24-year-old Berwyn man faces a federal charge for allegedly taking part in a crime spree last week that included stealing several items from a UPS truck in Oak Park while threatening the driver.

It’s the latest case stemming from “Operation Legend,” in which federal agents and prosecutors help Chicago area police counter violent crimes.

The federal robbery charge against Darius D. Young alleges he interfered with interstate commerce. Because he’s being charged in federal court instead of state court, Young’s legal prospects are dimmer, and he won’t even appear before a judge until the end of the week.

The crime for which he is accused occurred around 1 p.m. Friday in Oak Park. A UPS employee told police the delivery driver had stopped on Highland Avenue and heard a male say “get on the ground, stay down,” a federal complaint said.

When the driver complied, Young and two accomplices removed several packages from the UPS truck and put them in the trunk of a car, federal authorities say. The UPS driver observed part of a handgun in a waistband of one of the offenders, they said.

Young confirmed he was the suspect seen in the robbery video wearing distinctive striped athletic pants, authorities said.

When he and his accomplices opened the packages they had stolen, Young allegedly said, “the boxes contained items such as granola, toilet paper, and a pair of Jordan shoes,” according to an affidavit filed by an FBI agent.

Young was expected to appear in federal court Friday morning, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Illinois, said in a news release Monday.
