GENEVA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A more than 100-year-old tree was one of the victims of last weekend’s heavy rains in the western suburbs.
People have been taking pictures next to the cottonwood tree that once stood on Fabyan Island in Fabyan Woods between Geneva and Batavia Township.
Laurie Metanchuk, director of communications for the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, says the ground is so saturated the tree was uprooted Monday morning.
"Cottonwoods typically like to have their feet wet, so it’s a little surprising we lost this tree, but there was so much water running over the island,” she said.
There were a few other trees that came down in the forest preserve system, but none as large as the cottonwood in Fabyan Woods.
"It’s sad to lose a huge tree like that but the forest preserve district thankfully plants thousands of trees each year," Metanchuk says.
