CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you were not aware, there is top quality wine coming to the United States from Greece.
Certified wine expert, Ron Breitstein has this week’s food and wine suggestions.
In the ancient world, Greece was once one of the foremost producers of wine; however, in contrast to the country's important wine heritage, modern Greek wines are only now emerging in the rest of the world. In fact, Greece offers outstanding values for its wines and there are many new varieties that will expand your palette.
Here's some varieties to look for from different regions of Greece:
- From Northern Greece, for white wine, try Assyrtiko and for red wine, try Xinomavro
- From the Aegean Islands, there's the White Muscat known as Samos and the red Mandilaria, known as Paros
- From Southern Greece, try the white wine, Moscofilero, and the red wine, Agiorgitiko
- From Central Greece, try the white Savatiano
You'll find some different flavors compared to more traditional varieties, but the quality level and the flavor profiles of these wines are top-rated.
