(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Naperville City Council has voted to ban the sale of recreational pot when it becomes legal across the state in January.

The 6-3 vote Tuesday followed nearly four hours of debate on the issue.

More than 200 people spoke at the meeting, many wearing orange and white t-shirts that said “Opt out.”

Opponents raised concerns that legal sales to adults would lead to more young people smoking pot, increased addiction rates and more impaired drivers.

Supporters of recreational marijuana sales cited the tax revenue that would come to the city and said a ban would feed the black market.

Some council members said they'd initially vote “no” until the contentious issue went before the public.

The council asked staff to draft language for putting the question before voters; a date hasn't been set.

Illinois has allowed for the regulated and taxed sale of recreational cannabis, beginning Jan. 1. Cities can say whether they want stores.
