CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A conference this weekend aims to find a cure for the lack of gender equity in leadership within the medical community.

Dr. Shikha Jain is a co-chair of the Women in Medicine Summit that will be at the Drake Friday and Saturday.

She's a hematologist and oncologist at Rush who says progress is coming but not fast enough.

While women made up half of new medical students in 2017, only 16% of deans and 15 department chairs were.

Dr. Jain says studies have found medical institutions with women leaders have better retention and job satisfaction and win more awards.

As for how to get to there, she said, it's important to address bias against women and the leaky pipeline to leadership.
