(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The mayor of Gary says he asked the police chief to resign, but the police chief says the decision was his.
After only six months on the job, Richard Ligon is leaving as police chief in Gary.
He was the 11th chief of police in Gary in 14 years, according to the Times of Northwest Indiana.
Gary Mayor Jerome Prince announced that he had asked Ligon to resign.
But Ligon, 72, told WBBM that he was not asked to resign.
“That’s called firing, isn’t it?”
WBBM: It is.
“OK, well, no, I did not get fired.”
WBBM: OK.
“This is my decision to move on and really work hard to get things done.”
Ligon says he will work with the community and the police to try to “mend relationships.”
He says, “I really enjoyed the six months, and I just feel like when you close one door there’s another one going to open.”
