(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Gary city council president was in jail in East Chicago, Indiana after officials there reportedly claim he tracked down his stolen car, fired a gun at two teenagers and then kidnapped one of them.

It started Saturday, when the car of Gary City Council President Ron Brewer was stolen.

Brewer tracked it down, and the Northwest Indiana Times quotes police in East Chicago as saying Brewer fired at least one shot at two teenagers and then took one of the teenagers back to Gary.

East Chicago Police arrested Brewer.

Brewer's attorney is Scott King, a former mayor of Gary. He said Brewer acted appropriately.

"Under Indiana law, he made a valid citizen's arrest, which is provided for by statute," King said.

He questioned why East Chicago Police arrested Brewer.

"I'll just continue to do what I can do to get to the bottom of it," he said.

Brewer has reportedly been held in the East Chicago jail for probable cause for criminal recklessness and kidnapping.
