CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police say a 15-year-old student at a south suburban high school was killed in a hit-and-run crash this morning, and a motorist is in custody.

Chicago Ridge Police said received word that a 2007 Volkswagen Bug had been involved in several hit-and-run crashes in Oak Lawn.

Officers spotted that car before an officer did a U-turn on Central, not far from Richards High School, to follow the vehicle.

That's when, authorities said, the Volkswagen hit a 15-year-old girl as she was walking on Central.

Several blocks away, an officer arrested the driver of the Volkswagen, a 25-year-old Oak Lawn man.

Police say the 15-year-old girl died at a hospital.

Community High School District 218 issued a statement identifying the student and expressing grief at the loss:

"This morning we received devastating news that one of our students, freshman Amira Nairat, was tragically struck and killed by a car right outside of the high school.  As a community, we are deeply saddened by Amira's passing and we are struggling to find meaning in this senseless death. We want to offer our condolences and deepest sympathy to Amira's family, her friends, and her classmates.  May she rest in peace.  Out of respect to Amira's family, we will have no further comment at this time."
