CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The list of Democratic state lawmakers calling on Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan to resign because of the ComEd bribery scandal has grown.
State Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, in a news release Thursday said she hopes Madigan will do the honorable thing and step aside, given the federal probe that has implicated the Speaker.
Madigan has not been charged with wrongdoing. But Howard said Madigan's House leadership has failed, even if he was not involved in the bribery scheme.
She joins Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, and a growing number of Democratic state legislators who have become vocal about Madigan and the scandal.
Illinois state Sen. Iris Martinez, D-Chicago, also has called for Madigan's resignation. She is the party's nominee for Cook County Circuit Court Clerk, and Madigan is chairman of the state party.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritkzer, a fellow Democrat, on Thursday stopped short of joining their chorus. He said the speaker should address the questions that have been raised.
"If these allegations are true, the speaker is going to be required to resign, in my view," Pritzker said.
