Gunfire Hits Museum Window In Hyde Park

Police Tape

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The head of the Hyde Park Art Center says the building will recover after it was struck by gunfire Tuesday afternoon — he's just happy no one was hurt.

Danny Urbina-McCarthy, deputy director of the center, arrived about 45 minutes after Chicago Police say a stray bullet shattered a second story window of the building.

"It's safety glass, so, luckily it just shatters down," he said. "Luckily, no one was in the building, which is the most important thing."

Police say two men had opened fire at each other around 1 p.m., and Urbina-McCarthy said the public should know it was an isolated incident.

"We've never had a broken window in our entire history at this location. We've been at this corner since 2003."

Normally, the center would have been buzzing with exhibits and classes, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to close to the public back in mid-March.
