CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Alderman Ameya Pawar is marshaling some high profile support in his bid to become the next city treasurer.
At the local headquarters of the Service Employees International Union, outspoken and newly retired Congressman Luis Gutierrez endorsed Pawar for treasurer, noting that he stood up to powerful Ald. Ed Burke long before Burke faced federal corruption charges.
Gutierrez said Pawar reminds him of himself a generation ago. They are both children of immigrants and champions of progressive goals, some of which Pawar outlined.State lawmaker Melissa Conyears-Ervin and Peter Gariepy are also in this race, and Pawar says he welcomes the competition. He said he has nothing against them, but feels he is running a different kind of campaign.
