CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Northwest Side alderman says he was shocked when a constituent sent him a photo of a sign at a Home Depot saying that only a United States identification would be accepted when customers return items.

"Foreign identification is no longer accepted," the sign said.

That message at the Home Depot in the Brickyard shopping area also said: No passports, no matricula — a Mexican consular ID — and no paper ID.

36th Ward Alderman Gilbert Villegas was not pleased.

"Given the economy right now, you want to make sure you're providing service to as many customers as possible. And I was a little shocked that that sign had reared its ugly head there," he said.

Constituents sent me this photo today from the @HomeDepot at the Brickyard. My staff will be going there first thing tomorrow to verify that sign is no longer displayed. If that sign is there, Corporate will be hearing from me on this discriminatory practice. @chicagosmayor #wtf pic.twitter.com/0ygiW10bbL

Villegas says the sign came down at the store after he called, and the store apologized.

A spokeswoman for Home Depot's corporate office says: "This is absolutely not our policy and in no way represents our values."
