CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Hundreds of people comprised a diverse crowd Friday that celebrated Juneteenth with a march and rally near Chicago's lakefront.

Participants stepped off at Columbus and Roosevelt and ended up in Grant Park on a warm day with temperatures in the low-90s. Among their chants: "Black Lives Matter." Marchers stressed the importance of casting aside America's racial inequities that date back to slavery.

Juneteenth recognizes June 15, 1865, when union troops landed at Galveston, Texas with news the Civil War was over and slaves were free.

The occasion has gained significance this year, following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, in police custody and subsequent civil-rights demonstrations.
