CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Congressman Dan Lipinski was at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California over the weekend when a gunman opened fire on the crowd and killed three people, the lawmaker said Monday.
Lipinski, a Southwest Side Democrat, said he was on vacation and attending the outdoor event in Northern California with his wife, Judy.
"The shooter was not far from us as we heard the loud 'pops,' which seemed to get closer as we ran. We are very thankful to law enforcement. The tragedy would have been far worse if not for their quick action," Lipinski said in a statement posted to Twitter.
Police shot and killed the 19-year-old gunman, but not before the suspect fatally shot three people, including two children, and injured several others in the Sunday attack.
