CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An Illinois lawmaker has tested positive for COVID-19.
Democratic State Rep. Edgar Gonzalez Jr. of the 21st District in Chicago announced on Facebook he has tested positive for COVID-19.
Gonzalez Jr. said he was tested for COVID-19 ahead of lawmakers returning to Springfield on Wednesday for a "special session to vote for much needed legislation."
"Unfortunately, I tested positive. I was hoping to return to Springfield and work with my colleagues to provide relief for all of Illinois. I will not be attending the session and I have immediately begun to self-quarantine at home for the safety of my colleagues, my constituents, my family, and myself," Gonzalez Jr. posted on Facebook.
Gonzalez Jr. said his neighborhood has been one of the hardest hit by this pandemic, and "it angers me that people are not taking COVID-19 seriously. People's disbelief and indifference to the stay-at-home order and CDC guidelines is putting working families and frontline workers at risk. The intransigence of the President to acknowledge we have a crisis highlights the need for relief at the state level. I urge my colleagues to vote for the best package for all of Illinois and I urge you to take care of yourselves and your loved ones."
Gonzalez Jr. said he will be working from home during his self-quarantine.
