SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois lawmakers doubled the gas tax, raised vehicle registration fees and the tax on tobacco in an effort to gather money for a $45 billion statewide construction program.
The Illinois gas tax will increase from 19 cents a gallon to 38 cents, the first increase in 30 years. On the state increase, a fill up of 15 gallons could cost an extra $2.85.
Local gas taxes could increase, too. Cook County could see a 3 cents increase to up to 8 cents in Lake and Will County.
The bill also said the parking garage tax would jump with a 6 percent percent daily and 9 percent monthly tax increase, and the sale on cigarettes would go up $1 from $1.98.
For transportation-related projects, the measure also would increase the $101 license plate fee to $151 annually, and charge electric vehicles $248 a year rather than the current $35 for two years.
Gov. Pritzker is expected to sign the tax measure.
