Tax-Filing Extension Ending: Returns, Payments Due

 2020 Income Tax Due Date

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Even though taxpayers got an extra three months to file their income tax returns this year due to COVID-19, it appears the usual number of Illinoisans are waiting until the last minute to file.

Sam Salustro of the Illinois Department of Revenue said Tuesday about 10% of the state's taxpayers have not filed their returns yet.

He says that's the typical percentage of people who wait until the last minute.

While Illinois taxpayers can request an extension to delay filing their returns until Oct. 15, Salustro says it can be costly if they don't pay what they owe now.

He suggests Illinois taxpayers who can't pay all they owe now to work out a payment plan. That could help reduce the penalties and interest due to late payment of taxes, he said.
