GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --  An Indiana State Trooper suffered serious injuries on I-80/94 in Gary early Wednesday morning after his car was rear-ended by an alleged drunk driver from Wheaton.

As the troopers were investigating the crash, state police said an SUV was approaching at a high rate of speed. The other troopers tried to warn Adam, who was in his car. The SUV did not slow down and struck Trooper Adam's police car.  The impact caused the police car to strike the Mercedes, as well as the median wall.

Trooper Rosillo was able to jump over the median barrier and avoid being struck by the police car.

According to Indiana State Police, Trooper Adam was positioned in the driver’s seat of his car at the time of the crash.  Troopers Griffin and Rosillo then ran to check on Trooper Adam and were able to extricate him from his car as it was leaking gasoline.

The roadway was closed for approximately five hours for crash investigation/reconstruction. Assisting at the scene were the Gary fire and police departments.
