CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- March 14 is more than Pi Day, when the mathematical constant becomes a reason to enjoy pie specials at various restaurants. It's also National Save a Spider Day, a nod to arachnids and the role they play in the ecosystem.
While many people are afraid of the eight-legged creatures, especially when they come across them at home, they do humans a favor by helping control pests such as flies and roaches.
And, proponents of the critters say, the raft of news stories in recent years about the poisonous bites of Brown Recluse Spiders were blown out of proportion. These spiders tend to shy away from people; hence, the name "recluse."
Fun fact: many spiders have eight eyes.
Today is National Save A Spider Day! This picture is of a jumping spider. They are so cute! I wish they got as big as tarantulas. Whenever I find spiders in my home, I leave them be so they can eat the other bugs in the house.#NationalSaveASpiderDay #jumpingspider pic.twitter.com/4VHFSZtQri
